This event was run beautifully. This is my first year, and I really was impressed with the whole program. I loved the course, even though there were lots of hills. Actually, I train on hills so it was very manageable. Please don’t change anything, it was awesome.
Overall I had a SUPER FANTASTIC DAY! The race was organized and fun and the weather was perfect. My husband and I then had a great day at the park with my 1 year old daughter. My only complaint is that when we recieved the goodie bags my sister and I quickly ran them over to our car at the mall because we were not checking any bags. Now after the race, while we were in the midst of buying goodies for our daughter at the gift shop we hear about a coupon that all the racers could use today that was in the goody bag, which was in my car…. at the mall! And apparently having a bib number and a medal was not enough to prove that I raced and they would not give me the coupon discount! REALLY?! After I paid for the race and food, you couldn’t give me the discount?! It sorta put a spoiler on the day even though it is somewhat trivial. But we bought quite a bit of stuff and a discount would have been nice! Oh… and it was only good till today! But lo and behold I couldnot summon the bag from my car at the mall, where the race started, to get the coupon. Not cool.
Fabulous race yesterday. Weather was perfect, everything ran very smoothly. I only wished we were able to see more animals on the run…. maybe a new route for next year?! Those hills kicked my butt, but I finished almost ten minutes faster than my 1/2 last year. Awesome! Thanks!!
Awesome scenery. Towards the end there were metal gorillas that were on the side of the road that I thought were real! The muscians were fun too!
The up hill was OK but was it advertised as being partially unpaved?
The down hills killed my shins!
Otherwise cute T shirt, awesome medal, well organized. I think the course still needs a few revisions in regards the downhills which in my opinion are tougher than uphills!
This was my first 1/2 marathon. I am hooked now. The 1st hill killed me, but now I know what to train for next year. Don’t change a thing. I have a personal fight with that hill that has to be worked out next year. The entire event was well organized. From the parking to the shuttles back. It was fantastic.
Beautiful point-to-point half marathon course. The two hills were challenging, but do-able. First-rate design of the technical t-shirt and finisher medal. I loved the engagement via Facebook and even letting us vote on the winning designs. Awesome job on the transportation logistics … it was very easy to get back to the starting point after the race. I’ll be back!
LOVED it!! However, the HILLS were a bit EXTREME! Overwhelming, I must say, to have so many, but I had a blast just getting to the Finish. Thank you for the jokes at mile 7. I know some did PR, tho I don’t see how that is possible!
the race was great. it was a bit harder than some half marathons i have run. i just had hoped for more overal exposure to the animals, and it seems there is way to do that. i run on dirt and trails so i loved that aspect of the race. most people running this race are conservation minded otherwise i dont think they would be doing this. i saw many in the park after the race as well.
i ran with three women, and there complaint was simply not enough bathrooms along the race course. although they were not trying to win the race, but the wait at the portable restroom greatly diminished their times.
i hated and loved the hill mid course, but i really do not prefer a tough hill with a mile and half to go. i generally dont have that much gas in the tank at that point. it seemed most people were walking it.
i know a race shirt was included with entry price, yet at the after race festival you could make tons of money selling race t-shirts(different designs), and the proceeds could benefit one of the animal projects at the park.
there was an excellent family atmosphere with families at the park rooting and cheering on their families in a great location.
bottom line—we loved it. there were four of us, and we would do it again.
Beautiful race yesterday, from the excellent execution to the perfect weather. It was the most enjoyable half marathon I’ve run, despite those daunting hills! Smelling sweet grass fields, then turning the corner and seeing a camel was amazing… I hope to be back next year.
Had a “roaring” good time — especially those hills!…Loved the “bling” on the Finish Medal…don’t change a thing!. A shout out “thank you” to all event volunteers and coordinators..Great Job of keeping us fueled, cooled and hydrated…could not have finished with out your help. YOU ARE THE BEST!
LOVED It! We’re definitelly doing it AGAIN!!!!!!!! My husband didn’t train at all prior to the race and even though there were some kick butt hills he managed to finish in the 2:30ish. The event was well organized we had no problems of any kind.
Thank you for organizing this amazing event.
The race was nice with pretty nature views and with some (few) animals on the course. For future maybe add more animals or people along the way to cheer up runners (something like camel idea or drummers would be great). The “What hill” on the 6th mile was very steep maybe next year can put on the map little warning sign that people will prepare/train for it. Overall awesome event, definitely enjoyed the Safari Park after the marathon.
The most beautiful Half-Marathon course I have ever run. But smaller hills and a longer route inside the park next time – please, so that we can see more animals. Great weather. A big thank you to the event volunteers – great job!
Very good run! Thank you to the volunteers, they did a great job. The course was excellent especially the view (reward)at the top of the hill (Mile 7), and the camel was a clever addition. I will recommend this run for next years.
Congratulations to the event organizers.
Wow!! I have never done anything so hard! It was an amazing experience for my first half marathon. Everything was organized so beautifully, the refreshments along the way were plentiful and the route was amazing with beautiful scenery and a grove of fragrant lilac trees! The shirts and the finishers’ medal were beautiful and much appreciated. I’m glad I didn’t know how bad the HILL was beforehand or I might have opted out of a great experience! Next time I know I’ll do better. Thank you for a wonderful time!
This was a beautiful and well organized event. I have ran a couple half marathons and was pleasantly surprised with this run. The hills were tough, but that is what made this event unique and different. THANK YOU for a great course. The volunteers also did a great job. I WILL be back next year.
Great!! Well done on every single part of this race. Well organized. Great course. Great volunteers. Great weather, thank you for making sure of that!! Great support! GREAT all the way around. (Except for the fake animals)Of course I wish there were real animals but I so understand that we can not disrupt their lives just because we want to. When I did see the elephants it was a big boost!Love the shirt, the medal and the discounts in the park for runners after the race. Kudos to a well done race.
So impressed with this run and will recommend it to anyone. Signed up because it’s near my house but my fave 1/2 marathon thus far. So scenic and challenging….I can’t wait to sign up next yr! Thanks to all the volunteers and the cheering support.
Please start the race at 6am. This is a VERY SCENIC course and we’d like to savor all it’s special sights. (The signs were hysterical, but if we stop to take pictures, it affects our race time…) This would also allow more enjoyment at the finish line. Yes, the park opens at 10am. But people entering the park can’t reach the finish line area in less than 20-30 minutes, so let the racers enjoy the experience for awhile longer….Thank you.
I have run quite a few half marathons this year already. I planned on running completely different halfs in 2013. The Safari Park Half marathonis the only one I’ve done so far that I want to do year after year. The run was beautiful, challenging, and very well put together. Thank you so, so, so much!!!
This was my first half marathon ever and I absolutely loved it! I already can’t wait for next year’s! My wife and child were able to see me finish and thank to you to the spectators that gave them room when I was finishing. She had a stroller and had some trouble getting to the fence to see me, but a couple people saw her with a baby and let her through…thank you again! I only heard about the negatives from last year’s race, but you couldn’t tell by this year’s! Good job Zoo!
Nice to have a challenging race, the hills were interesting to say the least! Nice that they were included in the course and not avoided, sets the race apart from other races focusing on flat and fast. I will be back next year.
